Hi I'm Julia Smerling :)

My name’s Julia Smerling and I’m the Public Relations Editor of the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Marquee Yearbook. My main focus is on writing and photography, in both journalistic and creative categories, and my goal is to ignite a flame of passion in other young artists.

My Story

My mom was the one who got me into photography. I would watch her swiftness as she moved around with the camera, eyeing what was around her, and in almost an instant each click of the camera captured the beautiful moments that only she saw. I attempted to take photos like her, but I soon realized how every individual is different from another, as well as the photos they take, and I wanted to discover my own vision when it came to photography. My mom give me my first camera when I was around six. I remember the first time I held it in hand, it was pink and had round playful edges, and was quite possible heavier than my clumsy unsteady hands that gripped on to it for dear life. I took that with me wherever I went, peeking through the hole trying to see what was around me and how I could capture it in my own distinct way.

Now many years later I’m still trying to discover my vision when it comes to photography. Every day I’m learning new techniques and meeting new visionaries who have helped me find more ways to capture the essence of a moment. Even though I am still on my path to discovering what it means to truly be a photographer, I have and will continue to love photography. The way that I have seen photography connects people from around the globe and tells stories that are not bound by any language barrier is beyond extraordinary.
